One purpose of this site is to provide information about the 50th reunion of the 1957 EHS class. The 50th reunion is planned to take place in Enid, OK October 4, 5 and 6 of 2007 (Friday and Saturday). We sincerely hope everyone will come to the 50th reunion of the 1957 class. More information concerning the 2007 reunion will be added as it becomes available!
Were you a member of the Lincoln grade school class of 1949? (4th grade?)
According to reliable information
classmate John Silver was. In fact, he insists his image is included in the photo. Can you pick him out? Can you
help identify some of the other members of this class? And let someone know? If I'm not mistaken,
John Silver is third from the left on the second row. Note that a smiling face was popular in 1949. It still is. Just
goes to show little has changed regarding the preferred facial expression of someone being photographed. :-) I
couldn't help but notice the younger set seems to be in a hurry! That lifestyle hasn't changed either.
Then again, perhaps the photo was taken the
last day of school and classes had been dismissed for the summer!
"The Vision Seeker" greets students and visitors to Enid High School. Placed in front of the north entrance, this 800 lb. bronze statue captures the image and essence of the Plainsman in a spirit symbol that unites past, present, and future generations.
This beautifully rendered piece, sculpted by 1958 graduate, Harold T. Holden, was on exhibit at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City before finding a home at E.H.S. Sitting on a base of Oklahoma red granite, the Native American Plain Indian appears quite regal, officially dressed in fringed leather leggings and full feathered/beaded headdress. He sits cross-legged while looking into the distance, as if pondering a vision. "The Vision Seeker" truly fits the image of the Enid High Plainsmen and has been adopted as the first official symbol, along with the logo "Where Visions Become Reality." This image has been endorsed by the Enid Tribal Council, ensuring future use of this symbol as the Plainsman mascot.
To beautify the area around the statue, the sidewalk was torn out and replaced by personalized brick pavers. These pavers can still be purchased in an on going effort to honor a special award or occasion in memory of a family member, friend, a favorite faculty member, or to commemorate your own graduation. Profits from the sale of pavers endow a scholarship fund for EHS seniors.
This monument was dedicated in 1998 and was made possible by alumnae and citizens, who through their generous contribution of time, material, expertise, or monetary donations, celebrate the spirit of "Enid High School, her traditions and ideals."
Ruth Ann Brown-Sailors - Vision Seeker Project Chairman
A plaque can be see on the North side of the monument: "Vision Seeker" by Harold T. Holden, Class of 1958. "Be your best and have a good time". Statue is dedicated to Enid High School in memory of Joe N. and Jane E. Champlin by the Champlin Family - October 14, 1958"
This statue, about 10 feet tall, is located directly in front of the EHS facility on the North side.
Additions to the EHS campus in recent years include the Enid High School monument (in the foreground) and the Millenium Fountain. The photo of the monument and fountain was taken directly West of these memorials with the camera pointed East. Unfortunately, at the time of the photo (August 13, 2007), the fountain had been turned off. Located on the ground immediately East of the fountain is a Plaque with the following words:

The late Sam J. Cerny (June 21, 1932 - June 17, 2007), an alumnus of the 1950 EHS class, provided the leadership and motivation for the Millenium Fountain shown in the photo. He graduated from Enid High School in 1950 and received a BS degree in geological engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1955. Sam was a member of the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, where he served 6 years as a board member and as president in 1997. Sam originated the idea for a Millenium Fountain while associated with the OKC Club. (In fact, a replica of our Millenium Fountain can be seen at the OKC Golf and Country Club.) He extrapolated his idea to the Enid High School Campus and organized an effort to raise capital for addition of the Millenium Fountain. He secured the assistance of 1957 EHS graduates Jerry Kunkel and Jean Yarborough-Hartsuck in raising the needed funds. Thank you Jerry and Jean.
Remember the size of the windows on the North, East and West sides of the EHS facility in 1957? Today their size have been reduced to about 1/3 of what we were accustomed to. I believe this "improvement" was made primarily to reduce heating and cooling costs. Central heating Other improvements include new flooring, new windows, lighting upgrades and much more.
On February 11, 2003, voters approved a $6 million dollar sales tax initiative to fund a new East wing and other renovations. With the addition of a new $2.8 million East wing and replacement of all the windows, EHS is literally changing in the physical sense. The East wing addition includes nine classrooms which will replace the portable buildings South of the main facility - still in use as of November 2006. Students have access to a fully equipped, large capacity family and consumer science lab.
A new food court/cafeteria includes ten serving lines with choices of cuisine ranging from Mexican fare and pizza to soups and salads. Food is prepared by the Enid Public School food service department and local commercial vendors. The food court features small group table settings and modern decor. Elongated windows, neon lighting, large school-theme banners and an outdoor patio add to the restaurant-style experience.
